She can be reached at lexi@lctmag.com. MILLENNIAL MATTERS The Fast 40 Roundtable at LCT East 2018 made me realize how bright the future of this industry can be if we try to see each other as equals. Looking Beyond Generations To See What's Similar A TLANTIC CITY, N.J. — If I read one more article or see one more social media post trashing people because of when they just so happened to be born, I swear I will scream (and probably scare a few people in the cubes around me at work. Sorry guys!). In these columns I try to be fair. I find it ridiculous when people automatically assume certain behaviors must be true about a person based on their age — it's something we are all guilty of, including myself (as you'll see below), unfortunately. It just doesn't work like that. And honestly, that goes for Millennials, Gen Xers, Baby Boomers…all of them. You're bound to find people in their early 30s working their tails off at two jobs as well as those of the same age whipping out their smartphones the second their boss' back is turned. ere are plenty of professionals in their 50s who have put in the blood, sweat, and tears required to get where they are today, while others are related to a head honcho at a company where nepotism reigns. Before this turns into a 700-word rant to meet my word minimum, I want to show you some bright spots for good generational relations. During the annual Fast 40 Roundtable discussion at LCT Show East, former Carey International CEO Vince Wolfington walked into the room. At first, I caught myself thinking, "What the heck is he doing here? What could he possibly have to say to a group of youngsters like ourselves?" I should have been thinking the opposite way. is was an opportunity for someone from a more senior generation to hear the questions, comments, and concerns of the people who are not "the future leaders of the industry"…they have already assumed the position. Many Fast 40 members are already presidents, CEOs, or in upper management roles. It's important for industry members of all ages to look for what they have in common with one another, and respect what makes them different. Diversity is our greatest strength. As I watched the operators at the individual tables talk with each other, I saw some heated discussions occur, but they never got out of hand. For the industry to progress, we need to allow an array of voices to be heard. We can't discount someone because of the way they look, the number of cars they run in their fleet, or where they operate. As a bonus, I've included some of the questions that were discussed: 1. Do you have any remote employees? If yes, how's it working out? If no, why not? 2. Will autonomous vehicles make the luxury transportation industry obsolete, or improve safety? 3. Is your company jumping into motorcoaches, or sticking with smaller vehicles? Why? 4. As the leaders of a new generation, what are you doing to help make a change in the industry?
