She can be reached at lexi@lctmag.com. MILLENNIAL MATTERS In order to get your working Millennials to see the bigger picture, you have to allow them to exit the office every now and then. Push Your Younger Employees Out Of The Work Nest I 'm a writer. My job consists of sitting (or standing!) at my desk and typing until something coherent and meaningful spills out onto the digital page. However, I'm also a journalist, so that means I'm not a writer of fiction (If I hear Fake News one more time…). In order to "get the scoop," I have to make calls, track down company details through the depths of Google, and message my network of sources across the country to paint a picture that will hopefully help you continue to better your business. At LCT, we are also required to embark on "reader calls"…which is basically a fancy way of saying we ask local operators if we can stop by, tour their facilities, interview them for articles, and sometimes even go to lunch with them and talk about life outside the industry. In addition to LCT trade shows and other industry related events, these are some of the most eye-opening experiences that have shaped me and the knowledge I've gained about the industry. So my question to you is this: Are you giving your Millennial employees the opportunity and freedom to get out there and experience industry events that will help them gain a deeper understanding of their jobs? You could be reading this at LCT East…did you bring one of your younger managing staff members with you? If the answer is no, it's something to reevaluate. You've still got time before the International LCT Show, so I will make my argument here. Face Time Allowing your younger staff members to attend trade shows with you (or in your stead) gives them the opportunity to meet the people they deal with over the phone and through email face-to-face, as well as connnect with some you may not do business with yet. I've often heard the complaint Millennials never want to talk to people over the phone, or they lack social skills. Well, how will they ever improve if they are stuck at their cubicle all day? e old saying is practice makes perfect. In order to practice, they have to be given a shot. Proving Their Worth Trade shows also provide an excellent opportunity to show you trust them to use the time and your investment in them wisely. I understand these shows aren't cheap; adding another person to the tab will make a dent in your wallet. But much like the luxury service you provide, you get what you pay for. Millennials are eager to prove the stereotypes about them aren't true. Ask them to come up with a short list of goals they are planning to achieve while at the Show, and they will definitely come back with results. Even if you let them roam free, there's no doubt they'll fortify relationships when they are given the opportunity to be themselves and represent your brand. The Never-Ending Story Want to know why turnover rates are so high? It's not because you don't have a nap room, a pool table, open office floor plan, or some other silly fad. It's because, inherently, work isn't fun. at's why it's called work. When your employees come in, they feel like they are trapped in an endless loop of monotony. Clock in, work, take a short break, work, eat lunch, work, go home, and repeat the next day for the next however many years until they retire or die. Let them get out of the office doing something that will benefit them and your company. It'll reinforce the fact you care about their growth, you're not just there to crack the whip, and you understand the benefits of a nontraditional work day from time to time. 69% of all full-time workers cite a "boss who doesn't allow [me] to work flexibly" as a leading reason for leaving a job, and Millennials rate workplace flexibility with higher importance than every other generation.
